Pilgrims’ Friend Society – Getting Real about Getting Older
In January 2023, Pilgrims’ Friend Society commissioned YouGov to pose some key questions about how individuals in mid-life – those aged between 40 and 60 – in the UK are preparing for later life (70+). Earlier that year, the society conducted research with YouGov which revealed that 54% of UK adults between 40 and 60 believe that later life is a time to dread, and only 38% thought it was a period to anticipate. The study also showed that while 86% consider it crucial to prepare for later life, 24% hadn’t taken any steps towards this.
Therefore, the society aimed to assist individuals in preparing for their later years, ensuring they thrive during that period. A significant realization was understanding that it’s never too early to begin preparations!
Their research inquired about financial, physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual preparations. While a higher percentage, 39%, had made some financial plans for retirement, and 30% had adjusted their diet and exercise routines, a mere 2% had consulted with a counsellor or mentor about aging, and only 7% had composed a bucket list. It appears that while some practical preparations are underway, the majority aren’t considering how to maintain their emotional, mental, and spiritual health as they age.
All statistics, unless specified otherwise, are sourced from YouGov Plc. The total sample size was 4645 adults, of which 1566 were aged 40-60. The fieldwork was conducted between 13th-17th January 2023. The survey was executed online. The data has been weighted and is representative of all UK adults (aged 18+). Full results can be accessed at the Pilgrims’ Friend Society website.
