Press Release from Faith in Later Life:
Love My Neighbour to save lives this winter.
Every winter there are around 25000-30000 excess deaths caused at least in part by loneliness amongst older people.
The Christian charity, Faith in Later Life has launched a winter campaign calling on Christians and Churches across the country to support their older neighbours this Winter and save lives.
Love My Neighbour is a simple but potentially lifesaving and lifegiving campaign to remind and encourage Christians to intentionally connect with older neighbours this winter.
Whether we live in a house, a flat, in a care home, or anywhere else; this is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to share God’s love with people within and beyond the church family.
The campaign focuses on the winter months when loneliness is a key contributor to around 25,000-30,000 excess deaths, most of which are represented by older people.
This campaign, launching today (1st November) will run until March with an intentional focus on encouraging Christians to pray for, offer practical support and bring good news to older people in their neighbourhood.
As the campaign develops, so will social media encouragements and a special resources section on the Faith in Later Life website:
Alexandra Drew, Lead Officer for Faith in Later Life, said:
“Winters can be long, and the increased loss of social connection and companionship many older people face in this season can have serious consequences for them. Jesus calls us to love our neighbours, and for anyone not already proactively loving their older neighbours with prayer, friendship and practical support, our Love My Neighbour campaign is a catalyst to respond to this call.
Loneliness is a struggle for many, and the statistics bear out the large number of excess deaths in the winter period. Imagine if every one of the 4 million Christians in the country reached out intentionally to an older neighbour what a difference that would make!”
